Cool Stories

The short of it:

  • You have a fascinating, captivating story. You, personally, do.
  • I want to help you tell that story in some form or fashion, ’cause I love stories.
  • If you don’t think you want to tell the story you have, that’s ok. Check it out…

The long of it:

You have a story. It’s likely quite interesting. You may not think this is true. In fact, if you are like most people I know, you don’t think it’s true.
You’re wrong.

You are interesting, fascinating, cool. I can be sure of this. Partly because, well, I’m cheating.

See, people who have nothing going on aren’t online reading blogs about, well, anything. They’re sitting in front of a television watching the distraction which requires the least amount of effort on their part to keep up with. Do I sound snobbish? I should. I am deeply snobbish.

You’re different. You have a story. Especially if you’re here. This place, this blog, is about a solo performance artist and a comedy he wrote about his devastating crisis of faith. Sound interesting? A lot of people tell me the story sounds interesting.

You know what I feel every time I do the play? I feel like no one will care about the story, that they’ll be bored and want their money back, that it will be irrelevant to them and that I really ought to shut up and go home instead of wasting anyone’s time.

But that’s silly. I’ve got a great story.

And you’re here with me, hangin’ with me at the coffee shop or on the couch. If you’re here, you’re probably pretty interesting. You’ve got a great story, too.

I want to help you create your story.

Wanna give it a try?

Over the next several posts I’m going to lay down some basic info about how to build your story. The info I give you can be used to create a story as a written narrative or as a script. (The script could be for a one-person show, a play with several actors, a movie, etc.)

The story we make together might not be a true story or based on a true story. Maybe you have been sitting on an idea for a while. Maybe you didn’t realize that idea you had would make for a great story. We’ll find out together.

I’ll be speaking as if we’re shooting for a live solo performance similar to mine, but if you have questions about how to apply some principle or other to another medium, just ask in the comments. Sound cool?

Principle #1: Your story isn’t about you.
